Dock charging · three things to check

Laptop charging slowly through a dock or hub: what to check

The short answer

  1. What the dock sends to the laptop. It's the “Laptop charging” figure, not the dock's power input or its total across all ports.
  2. What your laptop came with.If the dock's figure is lower than your laptop's own charger, the laptop charges more slowly while it works hard, and can run down under a heavy load.
  3. The conditions. Some docks send less to some laptops, and a hub can only pass on part of what your charger gives it. The cable matters too: use the one that came with the dock.

Input is not output

Hubs without their own power supply take your laptop charger in and keep some of it. The Anker 553 USB-C Hub (8-in-1) is a clear example, in Anker's figures:

Power input
Your own USB-C charger, into the PD-in port (up to 100W)
Laptop charging
Up to 85W
